When a new therapist joins our team at Mathews Counseling, we ask them to tell us why they choose therapy as a career. Below one of our newest kids and teens therapist, Emone Black answers the question, “Why Therapy?” You can read more about Emone Black here.

Becoming a Pediatrician was the first job I ever wanted. However, everything changed when I learned I would have to do vaccine training. I am a big crybaby when it comes to needles. So I had to find a new potential career that involved working with children and teens without the needle. After doing some research during high school and presenting on the benefits of counseling, I knew this would be the career for me. Not only do I counsel children, teens, and adults, there’s no needles involved!

While it may seem like I chose therapy to avoid needles, there is a deeper meaning to it. I feel that working with others at an individual level can provide the most support. By supporting individuals struggling with their emotions or behavior through interventions, it can lead to a healthier outlook on life. I like hearing from my client’s that the tools they have learned have helped in some way. However, it brings me joy to know they are doing the work outside of therapy. There are times where we might not see the changes but, I help you to spot even the smallest change.

I hear at times how people feel like they have to be Wonder Woman or Superman but those characters had troubles as well. They balanced keeping their identities a secret while fighting bad guys, and at times, lost. They had a lot of external and internal challenges but had people in their corner to support them. I want to be that person in your corner that supports you as you learn tools necessary to help your well-being. In therapy, I take time to hear your troubles and help you process your thoughts and feelings while providing a safe and trusting space. I hope to provide any individual I work with an engaging environment that promotes growth.
