When a new therapist joins our team at Mathews Counseling, we ask them to tell us why they choose therapy as a career. Below one of our newest therapists, Kacie Salamanca answers the question, “Why Therapy?” You can read more about Kacie Salamanca here.

What does music have to do with therapy, you might ask? Well, quite a lot actually, and I’m so glad you asked! I myself have always been drawn to music. I started my undergraduate degree as a music therapist but decided that wasn’t the right fit for me at the time. I continued on and ultimately started my career as a school counselor which then came back full circle (cue The Circle of Life) and decided to start private practice as a therapist. But music is still a huge part of my life. I think my favorite part of music is how each note, on its own, may not seem that special and maybe insignificant. It may seem out of place or impossible to play. We might even question why that note is even there or why there’s a rest in the measure. Perhaps the tempo seems too fast or too slow! But when the song comes together, we start to hear a partnership between the notes. The notes start to make more sense. We start to feel the ebb and flow of the song.

Life is a lot like a musical score (sorry Forrest, no boxes of chocolate here). Sometimes we need someone to help us see the bigger picture and help us make sense of what is going on around us. We can get so caught up in the individual notes, or details, we miss the whole movement! Therapy can help us through each measure of life, sifting through the notes to find the harmony; the balance.

To me, being a therapist is helping individuals make sense of their life symphony. It means walking alongside you and partnering with you as you take each step, each note, towards restoration and healing. I can’t imagine anything better! By partnering with me, we will work together through life’s cadences, the ups and downs in the rhythm of each challenge. I do this through strength-based practices, holistic health education, cognitive-behavior techniques, mind-body connection, and of course we always like to have a little fun along the way! My unique perspective and experience gives me the opportunity to work with many different walks of life. Whether you are looking for support in keeping a balanced life or need help coping with a loss, I would be honored to partner with you. My hope is that through this investment, you or your child will rediscover their masterpieces and use the skills, the techniques we learn in each session to create perhaps another beautiful symphony.
