Billing & How to Pay for Therapy
At Mathews Counseling, we believe your mental health should be a priority—not a financial burden.
We offer multiple therapy payment options to make counseling more affordable and accessible, so you can get the support you need without unnecessary stress.
Use Your Insurance for Therapy
We are in-network with several top insurance providers:
-
Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS)
-
Aetna
- Aetna/Meridian
-
Cigna/Evernorth
Most insurance plans include mental health benefits and using your insurance can reduce your out-of-pocket costs for counseling.
Tip: While we are happy to check benefits for you, calling your insurance provider directly to confirm your coverage for therapy, including your copay and deductible helps you get the most accurate information as quickly as possible.

Save With Discounted Multi-Session Packages (Private Pay Therapy Clients)
If you’re paying out of pocket, our multi-session therapy packages make it easier to plan for your care and save money in the process. By purchasing sessions in advance, you can:
-
Lower your cost per session – You’ll get a reduced rate compared to paying one session at a time.
-
Commit to your progress – Pre-scheduling your sessions helps you stay consistent, which is key to seeing lasting results.
-
Enjoy flexibility – Use your package for weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly sessions, depending on your needs.
-
Simplify payments – Pay once for a set of sessions and avoid repeated transactions.
Package Options:
-
3 sessions – 5% off total cost
-
6 sessions – 8% off total cost
-
10 sessions – 10% off total cost
Multi-session packages can be used for individual, couples, or family therapy, and they pair perfectly with CareCredit® if you’d like to spread out your payments over time.
Flexible Payment Plans With CareCredit®
We understand that even with discounts, paying for multiple therapy sessions at once can feel like a stretch. That’s why we accept CareCredit®, a health and wellness credit card that lets you spread out the cost of your care over time.
This is especially helpful if you want to take advantage of our multi-session package discounts but prefer to pay in smaller monthly installments rather than all at once.
CareCredit can also be used for:
-
Couples Counseling Intensives
-
Continuing therapy if your insurance changes or ends
-
Starting therapy right away and paying gradually over time
How it works:
-
Apply online or in our office and get a quick credit decision.
-
Choose from short-term no-interest financing (if paid in full within the promotional period) or extended fixed monthly payment plans.
-
Once approved, you can use CareCredit here at Mathews Counseling and at thousands of other providers nationwide.
By pairing multi-session package discounts with CareCredit’s flexible payment plans, you can commit to your therapy goals now—without having to pay the full amount upfront.

Help With Out-of-Network Therapy Benefits
If we aren’t in-network with your insurance provider, that doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t use your insurance for therapy with us. Many clients with out-of-network benefits are still able to get a portion of their therapy costs reimbursed by their insurance company.
Here’s how we can help:
-
Superbill Support – We provide you with a detailed invoice (called a superbill) after your sessions. It includes all the information your insurance company needs to process a claim—such as dates of service, session codes, fees, and payment confirmation.
-
Step-by-Step Guidance – While we can’t submit claims on your behalf, we can walk you through how to submit your superbill to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
-
Know Before You Start – We recommend contacting your insurance provider before your first session to ask:
-
Does my plan offer out-of-network mental health benefits?
-
What percentage of the session fee is reimbursed?
-
Is there an out-of-network deductible, and how much of it have I met?
-
Are there any limits on the number of sessions covered?
-
Many clients find that even partial reimbursement significantly lowers their overall cost of therapy while allowing them to see the provider they feel is the best fit for their needs.
Affordable Therapy with Master’s Level Therapist Interns
Working with one of our master’s level therapy interns is a great way to access therapy at a lower cost while still receiving high-quality care. Interns are graduate students completing the final stages of their training in counseling or marriage and family therapy. At Mathews Counseling, we carefully select each intern and provide them with close supervision from our licensed clinicians to ensure you receive excellent support.
Here’s why this option may be a good fit:
-
Lower Rates – Sessions with interns are offered at a reduced fee, making therapy more affordable while still maintaining professional oversight.
-
Fresh Perspectives – Interns bring energy, curiosity, and the latest research-based approaches into their sessions.
-
Supportive Supervision – Every intern’s work is guided by a licensed therapist, giving you the benefit of both their care and the wisdom of their supervisor.
Many clients find that working with an intern allows them to begin or continue therapy at a price point that fits their budget without compromising the quality of care.

Sliding Scale Rates
We recognize that therapy is an investment, and sometimes the cost can feel overwhelming. To help bridge that gap, some of our therapists offer a sliding scale rate based on household income. This means the session fee is adjusted to better fit your financial situation.
Here’s what you need to know about this option:
-
Income-Based Rates – Fees are determined according to your income, helping reduce the financial strain of consistent therapy.
-
Limited Availability – Each therapist reserves only a few sliding scale slots in their schedule to balance affordability with sustainability, so space is often limited.
-
Client-Friendly Process – If you’re interested, our team will walk you through the application process in a supportive, non-judgmental way.
While sliding scale availability is not guaranteed, many clients have found it to be a meaningful way to access the care they need during seasons when finances are tight. Our team is happy to discuss whether this may be an option for you.

Yes. Using CareCredit, you can spread your therapy costs into monthly payments—great for multi-session packages, couples intensives, or insurance changes.
Does insurance cover therapy at Mathews Counseling?
We are in-network with BCBS, Aetna, and Cigna/Evernorth. Coverage varies by plan, so we recommend confirming your benefits with your insurance provider before starting.

You can purchase 3, 6, or 10 sessions in advance at a discounted rate (5%, 8%, or 10% off), saving money while committing to your therapy plan.
What if you’re not in-network with my insurance provider?
If we’re not in-network, we can provide a superbill—a detailed receipt you can submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
