Lisa Garland

Life is rarely static, and the challenges we face—such as grief, loss, and chronic anxiety—often bleed into our most private spaces. Your body and home should feel like a safe haven, not a source of constant stress. You deserve to feel connected and supported.

Hi! I’m Lisa Garland and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate here at Mathews Counseling. I partner with individuals, couples, and families to help navigate difficult life transitions. Whether you are mourning a loss, managing the weight of anxiety, or adjusting to a new stage of life, I provide a trauma-informed, LGBTQ+ affirming, and kink-positive environment to help you find your footing again.

Prior to graduating from NCCU’s Master of Social Work program, I earned a Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I have over a decade of experience in social work and health education, which has given me a deep understanding of how to support people through life’s biggest challenges. I am also a native Spanish speaker and am honored to provide therapy to both English and Spanish-speaking clients.

I believe therapy is a partnership where we work together to untangle the knots. My goal is to provide a warm, safe space where you can be honest without fear of judgment. I specialize in sexual health and intimacy, which are fundamental to well-being, yet they are often the hardest things to talk about. Whether you are navigating specific sexual health challenges, struggling with a lack of desire, or feeling disconnected from your body, you deserve a space where these topics are treated with clinical expertise and zero judgment. I help individuals and couples move past the shame, silence, and frustration that often surround intimacy to build a life where they feel confident, connected, and physically empowered.

Outside of being a therapist, I enjoy being outside in my garden (I love to grow flowers!) and spending time with my family. I see my role as your guide, helping you find the path you seek. I would love to work together towards helping you thrive.

Lisa is a therapist meeting with clients, offering both in-person and telehealth appointments.

¡Hola!

What our clients are saying about Mathews Counseling therapists

“Therapy was tough, but in a good way. It challenged both my husband and me to think about how each of us interacts in the marriage.”

“After seeing several counselors elsewhere, this was the first time I felt genuinely heard and understood.”

“My husband was worried about the therapist “taking sides”, which doesn’t happen.  It’s a collaborative conversation and we are delving into other issues that were not readily on the surface.”
