Jane Maxwell

When anxiety, worry, or depression take over, life can start to feel heavier than it needs to. You may find yourself feeling disconnected in your relationships, imagining worst-case scenarios, or feeling unsure about which direction to take next. Even when things look fine on the outside, it can be exhausting to carry so much on the inside. You do not have to suffer alone.

Hi, my name is Jane Maxwell, and I am a counseling intern here at Mathews Counseling. I am passionate about working with people who feel anxious, feeling down, or unclear in their path. My hope is that by helping you better understand yourself, your relationships, and the world around you, life will feel less heavy and the unknown won’t feel as scary. I believe therapy can be a space where you are listened to closely, understood as a whole person, and never judged for where you are starting.

In our work together, I want to understand not just what is difficult, but also who you are, what matters to you, and what strengths you already have. We may explore how worry shows up in your life, how you relate to yourself and others, and how communication can become clearer and more honest. I also believe therapy does not always have to be so serious and hope a little lightness can help us approach hard things with more openness.

Over time, my hope is that you feel more connected to yourself and the people around you, and more confident in the direction you are moving.

Alongside my counseling training, I have spent more than a decade working in the corporate world. That experience has given me a deep understanding of work stress and the challenge of trying to balance professional responsibilities, relationships, family, and personal well-being. I know how easy it can be to keep pushing forward while feeling overwhelmed underneath, and I bring that awareness into my work with clients who are navigating stress, anxiety, transition, or uncertainty.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at William & Mary. I am a clinical mental health counseling intern practicing under the direct supervision of Dr. Adaria Baker.

Growing up, I moved around a lot. As an adult, I spent more than a decade living in California before recently moving back to North Carolina. These experiences have shaped the way I understand change, transition, and the discomfort that can come with feeling out of control, starting over, or adapting to a new environment. They also help me connect with children, teens, and adults who are navigating uncertainty, identity, relationships, or major life changes.

Outside of therapy, I enjoy road trips, photography, gardening, and hosting dinner parties. I love spending time with my husband and our rescue dog, Luna. I also admit I am a fan of Bravo reality TV! For exercise, I enjoy barre and hiking.

I would be honored to work with clients who are ready to feel more grounded, supported, and connected to themselves and the people around them.

Jane is a therapist intern meeting with clients, offering both in-person and telehealth appointments.

What our clients are saying about Mathews Counseling therapists

“Therapy was tough, but in a good way. It challenged both my husband and me to think about how each of us interacts in the marriage.”

“After seeing several counselors elsewhere, this was the first time I felt genuinely heard and understood.”

“My husband was worried about the therapist “taking sides”, which doesn’t happen.  It’s a collaborative conversation and we are delving into other issues that were not readily on the surface.”
