Laurel DeVore

Life can be exhausting! There are so many distractions, responsibilities, and expectations that drag us into burn out, trigger emotional wounds, create conflict in relationships, and make it hard to live the life we want. We all deserve to feel confident in our own skin and identities.

Hello! I’m Laurel DeVore and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist here at Mathews Counseling. I partner with individuals, couples, and families to provide support, education, and reflection to create a life that fits each individual’s needs. I am passionate about helping clients to feel safe, seen, and prioritized. Trauma informed care is a foundation of my treatment approach and often we can downplay or discount our own experiences despite the profound way they have affected us.

I work with children ages 11+, adolescents, young adults, mid-lifers, and those aging gracefully. I genuinely believe in transformation through intentional steps and goals, which we will collaborate to create.

My session structure is person centered, allowing the client to set the pace and inform whether they prefer clear, structured sessions or more free form. I also recognize that sometimes that will look different at every meeting, because we are constantly evolving humans. My treatment methods pull from strengths-based solution focused, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, internal family systems, Gestalt, and narrative therapy.

My previous experience includes working in community mental health, providing a mixture of individual, couple, and family counseling to all ages from 3 to 90. My work has been facilitated in homes, in the community, in the prison systems, in an office, and in group homes. These settings allowed me to interact with many diverse populations and I have found a special passion for working with parents, teenagers, queer people, and individuals with a history of substance use or justice involvement. I am LGBTQIA+ affirming, ethical nonmonogamy affirming, poly affirming, kink affirming, and ground myself in an anti-racist, decolonizing perspective.

I graduated from UNC Wilmington in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, double minoring in Leadership Studies and Theater. Immediately after graduating I entered UNC Wilmington’s Master of Social Work program, graduating with my MSW with a certificate in Substance Use Disorders and Addictions, in 2018. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist, and Certified Clinician Supervisor Intern. In addition to therapy, I provide supervision to newly licensed, associate clinicians for social work and addictions.

IRL (In Real Life) I’m a huge nerd! I love video games, reading, Studio Ghibli, and all things fantasy. I love traveling and have visited many places including India, Belize, and Jamaica. My top bucket list items are to visit Greece and Japan. Hiking and connecting with nature has become an essential part of creating space and peace for myself. My spirituality has transformed and reshaped greatly over the years, while remaining an essential part of my identity and self care practices.

What our clients are saying about Mathews Counseling therapists

“Therapy was tough, but in a good way. It challenged both my husband and me to think about how each of us interacts in the marriage.”

“After seeing several counselors elsewhere, this was the first time I felt genuinely heard and understood.”

“My husband was worried about the therapist “taking sides”, which doesn’t happen.  It’s a collaborative conversation and we are delving into other issues that were not readily on the surface.”
