When a new therapist joins our team at Mathews Counseling, we ask them to tell us why they choose therapy as a career. Below one of our therapists, Mady Caplan answers the question, “Why Therapy?” You can read more about Mady here.
I realized I wanted to be a therapist when I was 16 years old. However, the road has been long. I mentored college students for five years, and seeing them get to know themselves better, set and achieve goals, and develop genuine relationships reinforced my desire to become a therapist. I had the privilege of watching these students work through anxiety, grief, shame, relational stress, and religious trauma, and it made me passionate about helping young adults move towards wholeness.
I chose therapy because I want to help individuals become the person they are at their core. I want to point them back to themselves and witness them come alive. I believe that therapy is an avenue of self-exploration, and with more honesty comes more freedom.
Gabor Maté said, “Trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic witness.” In that vein, I also believe that therapy has the power to bring real healing. Trauma is stored in the body, and telling your story and being received and validated can provide relief.
If you come to therapy with me, you will be met with compassion and warmth. I offer you room to process, to breathe, and just to be. You have nothing to prove and no reason to pretend with me. It would be a pleasure to journey alongside you as you uncover your truest self.
It is important to me to honor minoritized and intersecting identities, and through an LGTBQIA-affirming lens, our work together will be meaningful, authentic, and expansive. I will invite you to get in touch with yourself and embrace the parts of yourself that have been repressed or condemned by others. I hope to offer you the space you need to radically accept yourself and live according to your values.
