Chris Luce

The relationship you have with your therapist is incredibly special and important. Sharing your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with someone you trust in order to explore and understand yourself and your motivations can be an amazing and powerful experience. An experience that can energize and motivate you as well as clarify your past, your present, and your future. Connecting our past, present, and future can often give us insight into our needs and goals we want to reach.
Hi, my name is Chris Luce and I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist here at Matthews Counseling. I’ve been serving the communities I live in for over 35 years and I am looking forward to getting to know you and assisting you in your journey of healing and growth. Positive and negative experiences from our past often shape our journey in unexpected ways. Uncovering those connections often lead to breakthroughs and understanding how we get in our own way and how it can lead to adopting new habits, improving our relationships, and increasing our self-esteem.
For me, it is an incredible honor to be part of this journey with the people I work with. My approach to therapy is person-centered and a person’s choice. I am here as a guide, and while I may have experiences under my belt, that does not mean I know all the answers or that I’m an expert on your life. My life and professional experiences make me a great resource for others to utilize to make decisions that fit their life and the goals that they want to achieve. In my practice, I rely on cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, generational learning, mindfulness training, motivational and trauma-informed care. I also have training in EMDR for clients who may have more complex trauma to work through.
I’ve worked with many different people over the years, ages five to 76, from many different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, different socioeconomic backgrounds. I’ve worked with individuals, groups, siblings, families, parenting, and couples. My most recent work is focused on individual therapy with adults and children, as well as parenting education and assistance. I specialize in helping families create boundaries, resolve conflict, and open up communication. I also have done extensive work with clients who are working through traumatic experiences. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time gardening, the more flowers the better, playing with my dogs and hanging out with my family. I also enjoy being creative and often find myself with several arts and crafts projects in the works.

Chris is a therapist and meets with clients through Telehealth and in-person in Durham.

What our clients are saying about Mathews Counseling therapists

“Therapy was tough, but in a good way. It challenged both my husband and me to think about how each of us interacts in the marriage.”

“After seeing several counselors elsewhere, this was the first time I felt genuinely heard and understood.”

“My husband was worried about the therapist “taking sides”, which doesn’t happen.  It’s a collaborative conversation and we are delving into other issues that were not readily on the surface.”
