When a new therapist joins our team at Mathews Counseling, we ask them to tell us why they choose therapy as a career. Below one of our therapist interns, Oliver Holmes answers the question, “Why Therapy?” You can read more about Oliver here.

I believe that fundamentally, being a human being is a struggle. We spend our lives searching for meaning, striving for happiness, and longing to be seen and understood. Yet, so much of this journey is shaped by circumstances beyond our control. Even in the face of these challenges, we persist. While I don’t believe people should always have to be as resilient as they are forced to be, I am continually inspired by our ability to create meaning from the chaos of life. Therapy, to me, is a way to provide the support people deserve as they navigate this overwhelming existence.

On a personal level, I know what it feels like to struggle with belonging. Growing up in a unique family situation, I often felt unseen and uncertain about my place in the world. It took time—and many patient listeners—to help me understand where I came from, how it shaped me, and where I wanted to go. Recognizing that my story was just as valid and worth telling as anyone else’s was a transformative realization, and it’s what led me to become a therapist. I want to offer that same opportunity to others—a space to explore their history, understand themselves more fully, and determine what they need to feel whole.

I encourage everyone to try therapy at least once, regardless of whether I am their therapist, because taking care of yourself is a valuable use of your time. I hope that clients choose to stay in therapy with me because they see that my approach aligns with their goals. I don’t bring an agenda or a rigid idea of what therapy “should” be. Instead, I meet people where they are, trusting that they know themselves best. Therapy isn’t always easy or comfortable, but even in difficult moments, I will be here—kind, supportive, curious, and genuinely invested in your story.
