When a new therapist joins our team at Mathews Counseling, we ask them to tell us why they choose therapy as a career. Below one of our therapist interns, Caroline Grant answers the question, “Why Therapy?” You can read more about Caroline here.
I was drawn to marriage and family therapy because of my own experiences—both positive and challenging. Growing up, I was fortunate to witness a healthy, communicative, and loving relationship between my parents. Their example showed me the power of connection and emotional safety in relationships. At the same time, I experienced difficult dynamics with other family members that could have been resolved sooner if we had access to the right support. These experiences shaped my desire to help others foster healthy relationships and work through conflict before it becomes overwhelming.
Beyond my personal history, my calling to mental healthcare is deeply connected to my own journey in therapy. I first sought therapy at fourteen, struggling with complicated interpersonal relationships and the weight of a family loss. I was fortunate to find a therapist who helped me shift my perspective—not just on my relationships, but on myself. As I learned to give myself grace, I became better able to understand and meet others where they were. Therapy didn’t just change my outlook; it transformed my relationships and the way I navigate life.
I believe in therapy because I have seen the profound impact it has—not only on myself but also on my loved ones. I continue to attend therapy regularly, not because I’m in crisis, but because I recognize the value of having a safe space for growth. My goal as a therapist is to provide that same space for my clients. I want to meet you where you are, support you in your journey, and help you grow into the person you want to become.
