When a new therapist joins our team at Mathews Counseling, we ask them to tell us why they choose therapy as a career. Below one of our therapist interns, Kara Gooch answers the question, “Why Therapy?” You can read more about Kara here.
I’ve always known I wanted to work with children. Every job I’ve had—whether as a camp counselor, nanny, or tutor—has revolved around supporting and engaging with kids and preteens. Their imagination, curiosity, and resilience make working with them both fascinating and rewarding.
When it came time to choose a career, I discovered therapy, and it immediately felt like the perfect fit. I love helping others, and being able to provide a safe, supportive space for children and adolescents felt like a natural extension of my passion.
As I pursued my master’s degree, I quickly realized therapy aligned deeply with my personal values. Every day, more children and preteens need guidance, encouragement, and a place to process life’s challenges. I’ve always wanted a career that’s bigger than myself—one that truly makes a difference—and therapy allows me to do just that.
While children and preteens remain my primary focus, my interest in working with families and couples has grown. Change happens in connection with others, and I believe in creating space for honest conversations, emotional processing, and personal growth. Whether you need a listening ear, a safe place to express your struggles, or guidance through life’s challenges, I’m here to support you.
Therapy is about more than just coping—it’s about transformation. My goal is to walk alongside you as you seek change, find clarity, and build the life you want.
