Michael Anders

The push and need for therapy has never been higher. Many of your loved ones and friends may have shared wonderful experiences of growth and healing due to therapy. While good therapeutic work can do this, the act of beginning this journey can be frightening and overwhelming.

With this understanding, who we decide to accompany us on this journey is an important decision.

My name is Michael Anders. I was raised in Wilson, NC and received my B.A. in Psychology at UNC-CH in 2021. I am currently a MSW graduate student at the University of UNC Chapel Hill and a masters level intern at Mathews Counseling. My purpose in all of my therapeutic relationships is to help explore doubt and uncertainty, acknowledge life history and challenges, and to celebrate and support moments of success.

I have primarily worked with children and adolescents in educational and recreational settings. I have helped create tutoring programs and participated in mentoring programs for elementary students and at-risk-youth, respectively. With six years of experience as a tennis instructor, I was able to help junior athletes develop a sense of mastery and foster confidence in tackling new challenges. I also have previous internship experience working as a substance-intervention facilitator for college undergraduates. This included utilizing motivational interviewing (MI) techniques and harm reduction philosophies. Through these skills, I hope to collaborate with clients by explore ambiguity and uncertainty without the fear of being judged.

I believe that people do the best they can with what they have, but that doesnt have to satisfy us. Noting this, I also believe that we can acquire the tools and abilities to learn new skills and perspectives that make life a bit easier. I dont seek to cure” anything, but rather to learn how to live with what we possess.

In my free time, I enjoy cooking for myself and trying new recipes. Im an avid gamer and enjoy playing multiplayer with my buddies. I try to play tennis, go on walks, and make music when I can.

I look forward to working with you!

What our clients are saying about Mathews Counseling therapists

“Therapy was tough, but in a good way. It challenged both my husband and me to think about how each of us interacts in the marriage.”

“After seeing several counselors elsewhere, this was the first time I felt genuinely heard and understood.”

“My husband was worried about the therapist “taking sides”, which doesn’t happen.  It’s a collaborative conversation and we are delving into other issues that were not readily on the surface.”
