Maximilian Matthews
When you’re feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, depression, grief, or burnout, it can start to feel like you’re just trying to survive each day rather than truly live. For LGBTQ+ and BIPOC individuals especially, navigating the world while managing identity-related stress and marginalization can feel exhausting and isolating. You may find yourself questioning who you are, where you belong, or whether things will ever feel easier.
No one should have to carry these struggles alone as they can quietly shape how you see yourself, your relationships, and your future. Therapy can be a space where you are fully heard, supported, and affirmed as you work toward healing and wholeness.
Hello there, my name is Max Matthews, and I am a counseling intern passionate about supporting individuals as they navigate life’s challenges. I am particularly interested in helping clients explore identity, sexuality, grief, burnout, depression, and build lives that feel authentic, grounded, and sustainable. I believe everyone deserves intentional care that honors who they are, where they come from, and where they want to go.
I also work with LGBTQ+ and BIPOC individuals who are navigating identity-related stress. I support clients who are exploring sexuality and gender identity expression, or coping with the emotional impact of marginalization and life transitions. My work is grounded in providing affirming, culturally responsive care that honors each client’s lived experience.
I view therapy as a collaborative process built on trust, safety, and mutual respect. My approach is warm, affirming, and reflective, with an emphasis on meeting clients where they are rather than rushing them toward change. Together, we will work to identify the origins of your choices, understand your patterns, explore emotions, and develop practical tools that support growth and resilience. I see the therapist–client relationship as a partnership where you are the expert on your life, and my role is to walk alongside you with curiosity and care.
Success in therapy looks like feeling more connected to yourself, more confident in your identity, and better equipped to navigate life’s stressors. As we work together, you may notice increased emotional clarity, healthier boundaries, and a greater sense of self-compassion. My goal is to help you move from surviving to living in a way that feels aligned with your values and true self.
I am a master’s-level intern pursuing my degree in Mental Health Counseling at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. I bring over 15 years of professional experience supporting individuals in higher education related roles, with a strong foundation in relationship-building, student support, and advocacy. I am currently completing supervised clinical training and am committed to ongoing learning and professional development. I serve clients under the direct clinical supervision of Dr. Adaria Warner, LMFT.
I value reflection, rest, and meaningful connection. I enjoy spending time recharging, engaging in self-growth, and staying grounded in the things that bring balance and joy to my life. I love writing, traveling, listening to music, and spending time with loved ones. I believe showing up as a real, compassionate human is just as important as showing up as a clinical therapist intern.
I am passionate about supporting you in a space where all parts of who you are are welcomed, so let’s work together as you work towards your growth and healing.
