Jonathan Bell

The unpredictable and ever-changing world around us can sometimes be overwhelming to navigate.  Anxiety, depression, and unwanted feelings can hinder us from being able to live the lives we want. Perhaps life has become so stressful that you’ve fallen into unwanted habits like drinking more than you’d like, social isolation, or drug use, just to manage the anxiety that you’re feeling and feel normal again. For many folks, how we respond to things like anxiety and depression is often taught to them from multiple experiences throughout their lives without even realizing it.

Even though you might experience feeling stressed, anxious, or depressed, you can find new and healthy ways to cope with these feelings. You can understand these feelings and habits and change how you relate to them.

Hi! My name is Jonathan Bell, and I am a therapist at Mathews Counseling! I am committed to working alongside folks from all walks of life that are experiencing anxiety, depression, unwanted substance use or addictive behaviors, and difficulties in life transitions.

By using a personalized approach, I use a variety of therapeutic techniques to address the goals that you bring to therapy. I believe that we are all the sum of our parts and each aspect of our lives whether its race, sexual orientation, gender identity, faith affiliation, or cultural background deserves to be explored in an authentic and honest setting. We all deserve to be seen fully and wholly for who we are without judgment, and it is my sincere goal to ensure that you can bring each part of yourself into the therapeutic space. In order for you to achieve your goals, I work to build an affirming and inclusive environment with you at the center.

I primarily work with adults, college students, adolescents, LGBTQ+ identifying individuals, folks with a faith or religious background whether it is positive or negative, and individuals using substances.

As we work together as a team, we will be able to identify what in your world might be contributing to the issues you are experiencing, and together we can create a way to relate to these issues that will allow you to live your life unhindered. Though the issues and problems in your world might not disappear, we will be able to find healthy ways to move forward in life without the issues stopping you in your tracks.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Work Associate and Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist Associate licensed in North Carolina and I received my master’s degree in social work from UNC-Chapel Hill. My prior work experience includes inpatient work in psychiatric treatment as well as outpatient counseling and case management with folks living with HIV/AIDS.

I am a proud born and raised North Carolinian and love to call this state my home! Living in North Carolina allows me to do things I enjoy like trips to the mountains or the beach where I enjoy running, hiking, eating good food, and spending time with friends and loved ones.

I have an intense passion for connecting with individuals and hearing their stories. I consider it a huge honor and privilege to hold space for my clients as we get to know each other and brave the journey of healing side by side.

I look forward to working with you.

Jonathan is currently scheduling new clients and has availability Monday through Friday with evening appointments available. He is scheduling both in-person and online appointments.

What our clients are saying about Mathews Counseling therapists

“Therapy was tough, but in a good way. It challenged both my husband and me to think about how each of us interacts in the marriage.”

“After seeing several counselors elsewhere, this was the first time I felt genuinely heard and understood.”

“My husband was worried about the therapist “taking sides”, which doesn’t happen.  It’s a collaborative conversation and we are delving into other issues that were not readily on the surface.”
