Jessica Souza

Hi, my name is Jessica Souza and Im a mental health therapist here at Mathews Counseling.

When life’s challenges become overwhelming, and you find yourself struggling to cope with stress, anxiety, or depression, it can be incredibly isolating and exhausting. Together, we can work to ease that burden, explore your emotions, and develop strategies to navigate these difficult moments, helping you regain a sense of balance, purpose, and hope.

I believe that therapy is a collaborative journey where you and I work together to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. My approach is rooted in empathy, active listening, and a non-judgmental environment where you can openly express yourself. In our therapist-client relationship, I see myself as a supportive guide, here to help you gain insights, develop coping skills, and set achievable goals. Together, we’ll create a safe and trusting space for you to work through challenges and find a path towards personal growth and healing. Ultimately, success in therapy is about empowering my clients to lead more fulfilling, balanced, and purposeful lives by applying the insights and skills gained during our therapeutic journey.

My specialities include anxiety, stress management, depression, ADHD, adjustment difficulties, and life transitions. I primarily work with young adults, but see clients in all walks of life.

I firmly believe in respecting and honoring the unique experiences, perspectives, identities, and cultural backgrounds that each person brings into the therapy room and hold myself to a very high standard of creating a safe space for all.

I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate. I earned a Bachelors degree in Nutrition Science from North Carolina State University and completed my Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Appalachian State University. In my graduate practice experience, I worked at the Counseling and Psychological Services at Appalachian State University and had the opportunity to work with a diverse range of college students in individual counseling. Additionally, I worked with Appalachian Regional Healthcare Systems both with the inpatient psychiatric facility running groups and individual counseling and the emergency department serving with the crisis team. Because of these experiences, I have worked with a huge range of folks of all ages.

In my spare time, you can find me spending time with friends and family, walking my dog, being out in nature, or catching up on cheesy reality tv.

I look forward to working with you!

Jessica is currently scheduling new clients and has both in-person and telehealth appointments available.

What our clients are saying about Mathews Counseling therapists

“Therapy was tough, but in a good way. It challenged both my husband and me to think about how each of us interacts in the marriage.”

“After seeing several counselors elsewhere, this was the first time I felt genuinely heard and understood.”

“My husband was worried about the therapist “taking sides”, which doesn’t happen.  It’s a collaborative conversation and we are delving into other issues that were not readily on the surface.”
