When a new therapist joins our team at Mathews Counseling, we ask them to tell us why they choose therapy as a career. Below one of our therapist interns, Katherine Velardo answers the question, “Why Therapy?” You can read more about Katherine here.

My path to counseling has taken many forms—conducting social psychology and philosophy research, teaching undergraduate courses, organizing accessible community art events, and career counseling. While not every shoe fit, I realized that making connections and being present for people—listening, learning, and experiencing life alongside them was what felt most fulfilling. My own experiences in therapy confirmed for me just how important it is to have a space where you can show up fully as yourself.

To me, counseling is not about quick fixes — it’s about creating a space where growth, even when nonlinear or messy, is still possible and valued. It is when we are able to acknowledge our hard feelings and experiences, that we can take steps in the direction we desire. I believe every client brings their own unique way of processing and making meaning, and my role is to support that exploration with care, humility, and a willingness to learn.

I work primarily with queer and neurodivergent folks of all genders, cultural backgrounds, abilities, races, and life experiences. I prioritize meeting you where you are in your journey. While feeling anxiety, depression, and complex emotions is difficult in the moment, we can use the session to safely explore those feelings and listen to what is not in alignment. Often this means asking thoughtful questions to explore boundaries, identity, relationships, coping strategies, and the emotions that live in our bodies.

Therapy gives us the chance to pause and listen—to what feels heavy, what feels possible, and what might be shifting beneath the surface. These conversations are what draws me in: the stories, the relationships, and the process of healing. It also matters deeply to me to hold space for people and communities who have historically had less access to care, and to create a space where each person feels their voice and experience are valued.

When clients come to therapy with me, my hope is that they feel seen, validated, and understood. Whatever brings you in, whether it’s stress, grief, identity exploration, relationship dynamics, or something else, you will have a space to express and connect. I want to help you reinforce your strengths, build tools that are meaningful for you, and move at a pace that feels right. Counseling is not always about having the right answers; it’s about co-creating a space together where healing, growth, and self-discovery can take root.
