When a new therapist joins our team at Mathews Counseling, we ask them to tell us why they choose therapy as a career. Below one of our therapist interns, Ivey Easley answers the question, “Why Therapy?” You can read more about Ivey here.
I’ve always known I wanted to help people, and I’ve always loved psychology. When some of my family members went through sports injuries, I started to realize that recovery wasn’t just physical, but it was mental too. I became interested in that side of recovery and originally thought I wanted to become a sports psychologist.
Then, while I was in college, I went through a difficult season of my own. I felt sad and lonely, and I remember realizing that I couldn’t be the only person who felt that way. There had to be other people who felt alone, overwhelmed, or simply not like themselves. That experience made me want to help people who may be going through some of the same things I experienced and remind them that they are not alone.
To me, being a counselor means helping someone become the best version of themselves, or even helping them see the best in themselves when they’re having a hard time seeing it. I believe we’re all here for a reason and that everyone has a purpose. Sometimes, though, it can be difficult to see that within ourselves. I think counselors have a special way of helping us recognize things in ourselves that we may not have been able to see on our own.
That’s also part of what I hope to offer my clients. I know what it feels like to be sad, alone, anxious, overwhelmed, or to simply not feel like yourself. I also know how easy it can be to let what you’re feeling or thinking in the moment change the way you see yourself. However, those thoughts and feelings do not define who you are!
I had a counselor who helped me see the best in myself during a time when that was hard for me to do. That experience had such an impact on me, and now I hope I can be that person for someone else. If I can help someone see something good in themselves that they couldn’t see before, feel a little less alone, and move closer to the person they want to be, that’s why I chose therapy. Maybe therapy can do the same for you!
